Spotter Lake is in a hilly area, well-populated, but not overly so. It is prevented from becoming an upscale area by being dominated by the power plant, which sits along a high ridge, perhaps a peculiar or even dangerous spot for it.
As Mert drives through the town, he sees signs guiding tourists to the Lost Townie forest and the actual Spotter Lake, for which the town is named. The town proper has the aura of a βplanned community,β with many new-looking buildings carefully designed to look old, to evoke vague notions of a classic era.
Mert stops at the local Chamber of Commerce to ask a few basic questions. He learns that Spotter Lake itself remains unpolluted, and that it is a renowned habitat to a wide variety of birds. The hunting ground is part of the Lost Townie forest, and yes, the hunting ground remains closed due to an unnamed pollution, though not all the forest is affected.
It is the middle of a late fall day, and as Mert cranks down the window of his stolen car, he feels a slightly damp chill in the air. He points his car toward the most obvious point of interest: the power plant, partly shrouded in mist, and some miles away on the ridge far outside town.
